John Newton (1725–1807) négrier, capitaine d'un bateau négrier
Le 10 mai 1748, au cours d'une tempête, il connut une "grande délivrance". Dans son journal il écrit que le bateau risquait de couler. Ayant survécu, il renonça au trafic d'esclaves et devint pasteur … militant pour la cause abolitionniste.
